Question Time With Primal

1) What inspired you to get involved with DJing?
I was 17. I found an app called 'Djay 2' by Algoriddim for iOS. I started playing around with it on my phone and using it to make mixes for myself of predominantly deadmau5, Kill The Noise, and Feed Me 128-140bpm tunes as this was my thing at the time. The dopamine was incredible hearing how tunes complimented each-other when blended and transitioned, and it came very easily to me, so I wanted to play live, which I did at every house party I could at university for better or worse, then on the radio, and eventually on stage.
2) What artists do you look up to for influence and inspiration?
I am guilty of putting production value on my highest pedestal rather than the emotion and soul of song-writing. Thankfully, a rare few don't force me to confront that conceit by excelling at both. KOAN Sound have a commitment to detail and emotion that takes their tunes to unbelievable levels, especially with their 2023 masterpiece, Led By An Ancient Light. The entire album could expertly score a Denis Villeneuve film and you wouldn't bat an eye. it inspires me to follow what a song wants to be rather than what I want a song to be. They should write themselves and use us merely as conduits.
Aside from KOAN Sound, any artist who unapologetically walks their own untrodden path, through the fog of war, taking little mind to the gimmicks and trends that come and go, usually has my undivided attention. Vorso, Culprate, Igorrr, ring noord, Eckle (may the project rest in peace).

3) What artists from the underground DnB scene have caught your eye?
Themore I see of the scene the more I am impressed with dedication and commitment, if you put the hours in to produce, with enough time you will make something unique.
I had the pleasure of going b2b with Scartip at Big Love festival this year, and was knocked off my feet by a flurry of his raw, techy, and meaty own productions that communicated an individual, 'no fucks given' style. Again, unapologetically walking an untrodden path.
Fireworks Factory is developing an own style influenced by a mixed bag of emotional vocals, hardcore rave-stab-infused mayhem, and the techy fundamentals of the neuro greats. I have no idea what the next Fireworks Factory tune will sound like, but it will catch my attention!

4) If you could collab with any musician of any genre, who would you choose and why?
From my experience meeting your heroes doesn't always go how you fantasise, so I am answering this broadly and cautiously! I find myself more and more enthralled these days by any talented instrumentalist / vocalist who can understand a brief and inject emotion and technical wizardry into a performance with ease, something which is much more involved a process, some would argue impossible, as a producer at a keyboard. And then, something which is not easy to ascertain from the outside as a fan, someone who is organised and easy to work with, those dynamics will be far more significant to the enjoyment of the process than how impressed you were by that artist's prior work, I'm sorry to say to dreamers out there.
All of that being said, I would still cut off an arm to work with Angine de Poitrine.

6) If music was not your passion, what do you think you would be pursuing instead?
In my passion for video games, particularly fantasy roleplaying games, I might have tried a dabble in game design or game development. One time I made a prototype faction-based tabletop political game based in the Elder Scrolls setting, but don't tell anyone this, it ruins my cool serious brand. This isn't a public interview right?? Liam??? LIAM!!!
